Learning : increasing one's ability in a particular area. Not the same as "knowing" which is sometimes taught and graded in schools. Not to be confused with "grading," which does not always measure learning accurately. The teacher's objective is not always what the learner "learns." An involved learner often "learns" more upon reflection. Learning cannot be forced, although an inhumane amount of a certain subject can be presented. Once learned, if not used regularly, quickly forgotten. Learning may be acquired through observation, reading, listening, viewing, practicing, preparing, rewarding, praising, requiring, teaching, sharing, testing, speaking, falling, crashing, burning, etc. Learning is more fun if it can be shared or used currently or in the future. Being a good teacher often requires you to be or think like a learner. Learners can be any age, shape and condition. Learning can take place anywhere, anytime and in any situation. Creating a proper learning attitude can be a teacher's greatest challenge. If you are not learning, you are slowly sinking in a cesspool of stagnation!
Things I would like to learn: how to text, how to blow glass, how to play racquetball better, how to communicate with my teenage children, how to grow a queen bee, how to juggle 5 balls, how to make a better BBQ, how to build a cabin, etc.
Things I have to learn: completely different from the above list.
Things I should learn: how to understand my wife better!

ReplyDeleteI must say that you are fast become one of my favorite blogs. I love your insight and I love how I can always expect just a tad (maybe more) bit of humor. By mixing in the humor, you make things so much more enjoyable to read. I wish I had that talent.
And darn it if I don’t want to run off and make a list of things I want to learn now - thanks for a great way to top off this middle of the night homework venture. I enjoyed it.

Megs, thanks for the comment. Are you in the USU class with Brian Belland? I don't even know where in the world this is posting to, or if I am replying to you. I have yet to send my first text message on my cell phone...One more thing to learn!
ReplyDeleteI too enjoyed reading your post. I really like your perspective on learning and how we can help our students. I am sure you are a great teacher!
